Thriving during Family Vacation with an Infant and a Toddler: Tips from a Parent's Perspective

Are you gearing up for your first family vacation with an infant and a toddler? Don't worry; we've been there, survived that, and are here to share some invaluable tips to make your trip a bit smoother. Embark on this journey with low expectations, a dash of humor, and the readiness to embrace the unexpected. Let's dive into the wisdom I gained from our recent family adventure.

We recently took our first family vacation with an infant and a toddler.

Tip #1: Embrace the Chaos and have Low Expectations

The number one rule for surviving a family vacation with young children? Expect chaos, and then embrace it. From temper tantrums to diaper blowouts, traveling with little ones is an unpredictable adventure. By setting your expectations low, you'll be prepared for any curveballs that come your way. Expect the worst behavior, travel situations. Then that way when things go better you will be pleasantly surprised.

My first trip with my 1-year-old son to the Dominican Republic - we booked a red eye and I assumed he would sleep the entire flight and it would be great. I didn't pack a lot of toys or snacks because I assumed he would sleep. Big mistake. He was up for more than half of the flight and I was not prepared so it left me flustered and stressed. The next flight I learned my lesson and over prepared with snacks, entertainment and expectation he would be awake the entire time - then when he slept for a lot of it I was pleasantly surprised and a much happier travel mama.

Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination, so buckle up and enjoy the ride!

Tip #2: Plan Strategically

When traveling with an infant and a toddler, meticulous planning is key. Pack more snacks, diapers, and toys than you think you'll need. Create a detailed itinerary but be flexible enough to adapt to your children's needs. Consider nap times and meal schedules when planning activities to avoid meltdowns. Remember, a happy baby equals happy parents!

  1. Airplane Tips

  2. Book extra room or bulkhead if you can. This way you don't have to stress about kicking the seat in front of you and its easier for them to stand up if they want to.

  3. If your toddler is walking and you can afford it for longer flights- buy him a seat. It is so tough having a lap child that wants to run around and squirm in your lap the entire time

  4. Always call ahead the airline to ensure if they do not have a ticket that they add the lap child infant to your ticket so you don't have issues at TSA

  5. Navigating Airport

  6. Give yourself lots of extra time to get through security

  7. You will have to take your baby (even if they are sleeping) out of the carseat or carrier

  8. Get gate check tickets for your strollers

  9. Here is my favorite travel stroller and travel carseat

  10. Hotel/Location Tips

  11. Call ahead for kids essentials. Leverage companies that deliver cribs, highchairs etc for longer stays

  12. Packing Tips

  13. Packing cubs are truly your best friend. Get each kids clothes in the cub.

  14. If you are flying international - bring extras of the essentials such as diapers, formula or certain baby food. If you are local - plan to buy what you can when you get to your destination

  15. Favorite Toddler/Infant Entertainment for Flights

Tip #3: Take Care of Yourself

Amidst the chaos of family travel, don't forget to prioritize self-care. Parenting young children is exhausting, especially when you're on the road. Find moments to recharge, whether it's sneaking in a nap while the kids sleep or indulging in a cup of coffee at a local cafe. Remember, a well-rested parent is better equipped to handle whatever challenges come their way.

In Conclusion

Traveling with an infant and a toddler may not always be smooth sailing, but the memories you create as a family are priceless. Embrace the chaos, laugh off the mishaps, and savor every moment spent exploring the world with your little ones. Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination. So pack your bags, set your expectations low, and get ready for an adventure of a lifetime!

Savor every moment spent exploring the world with your little ones and cherish the memories made along the way.

Cheers to unforgettable family vacations!
